The best and worst things about having your own business

The best things

  1. You are the boss We've all had a boss from hell, haven't we? Being your own boss means never having to deal with people like that again.
  2. You get to make all the decisionsI bet you can't name a single person who's agreed with every management decision at your company. Except maybe the unreasonably cheerful girl who you suspect is on some sort of medication. Once you have your own business, you need never grumble about crappy management decisions again.
  3. You get to kit out the office just how you like it Gone are the dull grey cubicles and boring Venetian blinds of your old office. In come sexy curved desks, fabulous flower arrangements and stupidly expensive but incredibly cool light fittings.
  4. You can work your own hours Pesky bank shutting at five? No problem - you can knock off early and nip down there on the way home. Fancy going for a walk? Off you go, while the sun's out.
  5. Everyone thinks you're cool You know you're cool because it says 'Managing Director' on your business cards.

The worst things

  1. You are the boss Remember that boss from hell? That's you now.
  2. You get to make all the decisions So if you make the wrong one, it's all your fault. There's now nobody to refer things to when you don't know what to do.
  3. You get to kit out the office just how you like it But you only have enough in the budget for five biros, and your desk came out of a skip.
  4. You can work your own hours However, your hours are now 7am until 10pm.
  5. Everyone thinks you're cool Everyone thinks you're barking.
